• Light Underground

The vaults of the Stone Bell House, hidden in the heart of Prague, will light up for several weeks in summer thanks to the new program Light Underground – a light art intervention combined with dance performances. The Romanesque and Gothic vaults will thus start the dialogue with contemporary art forms.

The intimate dancing performances focused on light and motion, presenting four artist groups, will take place regularly in the late July and early August. They are part of the program “Art for the City”, which now also includes temporary interventions and projects in the public space in Prague.

Light Underground – Tanzometr

Dancer and choreographer Dora Sulženko Hoštová, musician Jan Čtvrtník and light designer Dominik Jančík prepared Tanzometr, an installation of technology and motion. In the unusual multimedia performance, they will explore the mutual relations of music, light and dance, and their measurable potential.

Light Underground – The Memory of Stone

British dancer and choreographer, Czech-born Andrea Miltnerová, and her long-standing collaborator, light designer Jan Komárek, will present their dance fantasy in motion and pictures. Their dreamy improvisation aimed at “anticipated lives”, called The Memory of Stone, attempts at returning the genius loci into the empty medieval vault. Under the ceiling, the artists will play with light and shadows, with sounds and silence. „Every place we're going to look at has known life. Someone’s been here, stopped walking… was born, or died. There are enchanted memories in stones, sleeping, but able to wake up for a moment through fantasy…”

Light Underground – Pod prahy (Below the Thresholds)

The narrative performances of dancer and choreographer Nataša Novotná, light designer Pavla Beranová and composer, lyrics writer and singer Vladivojna La Chia are called Pod prahy (Below the Thresholds)“Our story is woven out of motion, music, and light. In a space where the outer world seldom enters, unknown yet faintly familiar. Just step down a few stairs and we’ll give you a tour through the place that has been there for centuries, yet it’s unique in any given second,” that’s how the authors describe their work. Vladivojna La Chia composed brand new music for this unusual opportunity, wrote the lyrics, and will sing live during the performance.

Light Underground – Unfinished system

Marie Gourdain, French artist, stage designer, director and choreographer, Hana Polanská Turečková, choreographer that often interconnects contemporary design and art, and light designer Zuzana Režná prepared a choreographic installation called Unfinished system. The composition is based on a pre-defined code and rules, suggested but still a bit unpredictable, and will present five dancers and musician Jan Bubák. The installation resonates with the thoughts of Georges Bataille and his (unfinishable) system of unconsciousness. “The essential part of any thought is a thought that comes from somebody else, like a brick in a wall, part of a bigger picture. We're trying to build a shared building that can never be finished. However, its limits can cause the unpredictable.”
